Our entry for this international competition sought to develop a new approach to the opera house as an urban, even national, building. The auditorium was given visual prominence over the stage tower in a circular restaurant and light chimney which serves to illuminate the auditorium before the concert (and after in summer). The 'house', expressed as an artificial mountain stranded in a moat, with access by two freestanding stair structures, stands out in comparison to the rest of the building: the foyer is treated as an abstracted natural space, with a random grid of thin tree columns overlooking the fjord; the backstage is conceived as a city in miniature organised around a hierarchy of public and semi-public squares and streets, linking into the grid of Oslo. The public is allowed to traverse the backstage along a covered street, catching a glimpse of the vast energy and activity needed to produce opera which is usually hidden from view.
